Boris Friedman’s lecture “Collecting Livre d'Artiste Editions (What, How, Why?)”
Livre d’artiste editions represent an independent trend in 20th century art. The basis of each livre d’artiste edition is the original printed graphics: etching, lithography, woodcut. This trend, having originated at the very beginning of the last century in Paris, became one of the favorite activities of almost all leading artists and sculptors from different countries. In our country, the first works in this genre began to appear in the last quarter of the 20th century.
This lecture examines the main features of livre d’rtiste editions, their fundamental difference from other illustrated editions, using specific examples. The principles of forming collections of livre d’artiste editions, options for acquiring works of this genre, and mistakes made by collectors are discussed. The correct approach to the formation of this type of collection provides the collector with possession of original printed graphics of world museum level, which also have an unconditional investment interest.
